Invitation
Dear Carter Society Members,
It is with great pleasure, we the 2016 Reunion Committee, extends to you an invitation to attend The Carter Societ's 15th Anniversary Reunion. Our them this year is:
Jamestown Discoveries: Our Carter Roots in Early Virginia - Their Stories, Our Legacy
You will have an opportunity to walk in the steps of our forefathers and learn the history of how America came to be. Jamestown is considered one of the most hallowed historic sites in the United States. Our nation began at this spot. To visit Jamestown today is to find but small reminders of these beginnings. It resembles little of what the colonists first saw or later built. Fieldwork has unearthed archaeological discoveries of what may have existed those many years ago. We will stand at the gravesites of the first settlers, and we can only imagine sacrifices they made when leaving their homeland and settling in an unknown land.
We will go forward and learn the transition that occurred between Jamestown and what was to be Williamsburg. We will hear about the debates between colonists loyal to the king, and patriots led by Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and our ancestor, Robert "King" Carter. Events moved from peaceful protest of taxation by the British without representation, to a boycott of English imports, to the Boston Tea Party, to armed conflict. The colonists had to make the difficult choice btween remaining loyal to the king and fighting for independence.
The stories will be told by our event speakers who are archaeologists, historians, and authors from Williamsburg, Jamestown and the local communities.
We wish to welcome you to The Carter Society's 15th Reunion and Meeting. While we are in Williamsburg, we will be staying at the Williamsburg Woodlands Hotel and Conference Center. The hotel is located in a beautiful woodlands area not far from Colonial Williamsburg and Historic Jamestown. While we are here our new address will be:
Williamsburg Woodlands Hotel and Suite
105 Visitors Center Drive
Williamsburg, Virginia 23185
